Student Veteran Lounge

On January 29th the University of Illinois proudly cut the ribbon to commemorate the opening of our new Student Veteran Lounge. The lounge, located on the food court level of the Illini Union, 1401 W. Green St., is dedicated to military veterans but is open to all students. Because student veterans are non-traditional learners who often commute to campus, the lounge provides a central location for them to study and socialize with other veterans. The pictures also show members of the Illini Veterans, a registered student organization and chapter of Student Veterans of America preparing paracord bracelets for an upcoming fundraiser.

Ren`ee is a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was an Electrician's Mate. She is a senior at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and will have finished two degree programs in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. One major is Earth Science and Environmental Sustainability and the other is in Philosophy. She plans on using both degrees to supplement her graduate work through Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability and at the College of Law at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign. Outside of the academics, she is a proud member of Illini Veterans, National Parent-Teacher Association, the LGBT community, and Champaign Knitting Club. She volunteers her time with her son's boy scouts troop and various sport teams with her husband. She has written a children's book on the theories of space and time. Currently she is working on a children's book explaining basic cell theory and designing women's knitwear.

Matthew is currently pursuing a degree in Business Finance at University of Illinois. He is a veteran of the U.S. Navy where he has served two deployments in the Persian Gulf on the USS Theodore Roosevelt. His hobbies include playing basketball, working out, playing Xbox, and watching the TV show The Office.

Sam Erickson was a nuke machinist's mate in the Navy, where he did a tour on the USS Enterprise, and is now studying mechanical engineering in hopes of working in product design for a firearms manufacturer. When he needs a break from school he is usually at the shooting range, lost somewhere on his bike, or hanging out with some of the great people he's met since moving here. He's also been getting more involved with the Illini Veterans a little more each semester. He spends a lot of time between classes in the student veteran lounge, so feel free to drop in and say hi to him!

Jenny is a transfer student to U of I, currently double majoring in Political Science and Communications. She is on the Illini speech and debate team, and enjoys being a part of the Illini Veterans. When she isn't busy with academics, she enjoys volleyball, taking her dog on walks, and spending time with friends. Jenny is friendly and outgoing, and excited to be more involved with the Illini Veterans.
